The island nation of the Philippines, which has a tropical climate, is located above the equator in Southeast Asia. It consists of 7,107 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Philippine culture is an ideal combination of Eastern and Western cultures due to its indigenous culture seen among its tribal societies and of experiencing long colonial influence under Western powers.

So nowadays, a lot of tourists who want to experience good harmony between 2 different kinds of culture (like Excellent Handicrafts technology inherited by tribal communities, the custom of respecting the elderly, eating habits, etc.. from the traditional culture and speaking English, greeting, Catholic culture, tipping culture, etc.. from the Western culture) visit the Philippines continually.

Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines, English, and local native dialects are used. Especially, the Philippines is the 3rd ranking English-speaking country where English is used extensively in government, education, broadcast media, and business. Because of that reason, many people prefer the Philippines to study English lately.

The official name of the Philippines is the Republic of the Philippines. The nation's territory, which consists of 7,107 islands, is 300,000 ㎢. That is 1.3 times the size of the Korean Peninsula. Luzon and Mindanao islands make up about 65% of it. The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate and is usually hot and humid. The average yearly temperature is around 27 °C and there are two seasons all year round: the hot dry season or summer from December to April and the rainy season from May to November.

With a population of around 92 million people (in 2009), the rate of population growth is almost 2.04%. The major cities in the Philippines are Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, etc... Most of the people in the Philippines are of the Malay race, but there are also some Chinese, people with mixed American or Spanish blood. Through the influence of Spanish culture, about 80% of the people belong to the Roman Catholic Church while 10% belong to the Protestant Christian denominations. Also, there are Muslims, Buddhists, and those belonging to the Philippine traditional religions.

The Philippines was colonized by Spain (1571~1898), the U.S. (1898~1942), and Japan (1942~1945) for a long time but after World War Ⅱ, the Philippines separated formally from the U.S. on July 4, 1946.
